The most popular cable types are twisted pair (twisted-pair cabling), coaxial cable (coaxial fiber optic network cabling), and fiber optic cable (fiber optic cabling). Twisting pairs are the oldest type of cable and have been around since the late 1800s. These cables are still commonly used for telephone systems. Coaxial cables were created in the 1930s as a replacement for copper wire. Coaxial cable was originally designed for long-distance television signal transmission. Fiber optics were developed in 1965 as a way to transmit data over longer distances than could be achieved using electrical signals. Both coaxial and fiber optic cables are much faster than traditional twisted pair cables.

Benefits of Cable Types

Twisted-Pair – Twisted Pair cabling is the most widely used type of cable due to its low cost, ease of installation, and widespread use. Twisted-pair cabling is frequently used in commercial buildings, offices, and homes where wiring infrastructure already exists. In these applications, the cost savings of installing twisted-pair cabling instead of replacing existing wiring may outweigh the initial costs of purchasing the new cable.

Coaxial – Coaxial cabling uses a center conductor surrounded by a dielectric material. A shield surrounds the center conductor and the entire assembly is then covered by an outer jacket. Coaxial cabling is generally used to carry high-frequency transmissions such as video signals.

Fiber Optics – Fiber optic cables consist of individual glass strands coated in plastic. Fiber optics provide a higher bandwidth than both twisted-pair and coaxial cables. Because fiber optics are capable of transmitting greater amounts of information at higher speeds, they are often preferred for computer networks. Fiber optic cables are also immune to electromagnetic interference.

Fiber Optic Network Cabling Installation Considerations

Installing a cable requires several steps. After selecting the proper length of cable, the installer should strip the ends of the cable. Before stripping the insulation off the end of the cable, make sure the cable is well protected against damage. This includes covering exposed wires with tape or wrapping the fiber optic network cabling in paper. Next, the installer should cut the cable to the desired length. Once the cable is cut to the correct length, the installer should remove the covering from the end of the cable. Then, the installer should twist the two halves of the cable together. Finally, the installer should clean the outside of the cable. To ensure that the cable does not get damaged during cleaning, the installer should cover the cable completely with some sort of protective material. When installing a cable, it is important to consider the environment in which the cable is being installed. If possible, avoid exposing the cable to extreme temperatures, moisture, and direct sunlight. Exposing the cable to any kind of environmental hazard will cause the cable to degrade prematurely.
