Ethernet cabling is the most popular networking cable for connecting computers together. In addition to being commonly used for home networks, it is also widely used in offices and businesses for data transmission and communication. An ethernet cable consists of three parts: the twisted pair of copper wire (also called Category 5e), the jacketing material, and the outer sheath.

The twisted pair copper wire comes in two varieties: unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP). UTP is less expensive than STP and is considered better quality due to its greater bandwidth capacity. However, STP is much more flexible than UTP and is therefore preferred over UTP for use in wiring closets and patch panels.

Jacketing Material

The jacketing material serves as a protective layer around the twisted pair of copper wire. There are many different types of jacketing materials, including PVC, polyolefin, nylon, and aramid fiber.

Outer Sheath

The outer sheath helps protect the jacketing material from damage and may help prevent moisture penetration. Commonly used outer sheaths include PVC, Teflon®, rubber, and plastic.

Ethernet is a family of frame relay networking technologies standardized by IEEE 802.3. Ethernet networks use physical layer devices called Ethernet switches and routers. Switches connect computers, printers, servers, and network peripherals using point-to-point connections. Routers route traffic between different LAN segments or wide area networks (WAN) over IP networks.

What is Ethernet Cabling Technology?

The basic idea behind any communication system is to transmit information from one place to another. In the case of ethernet, the information is transmitted via electrical signals through wires. These wires are called cables. There are two types of cables according to their function. These are,

• Power Cables

Data cables carry the data while power cables provide electricity. Both these cables consist of twisted pairs. A pair consists of a transmitter and a receiver. Each wire transmits only one signal. When the wires are twisted together, they create a balanced transmission line. If one side of the line is grounded, then the other side becomes ungrounded.
