Mercedes-Benz GLE 2023: A New Modest Beginning in the SUV Series


Mercedes-Benz GLE 2023, the mid-size model in its extensive sport-utility series, has grown tremendously from its modest beginnings as the ML SUV 25 years ago.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE comes in two different body types: a typical square-roofed SUV and a more sloped-roofed Coupe variant. Six different engine options, including two grades of the AMG performance package, are available for the SUV model. There are a lot of options when the forthcoming EQE all-electric SUV is included. Everywhere else also comes standard with all-wheel drive.

The Mercedes-Benz GLE 450e SUV is brand-new, a plug-in electric hybrid with a 2.0-liter turbo and a 134-horsepower electric motor delivering 381 combined horsepower and a respectable 479 pound-feet of torque. The GLE 450e has evolved into a sharper-looking vehicle like the rest of the family, and this is especially noticeable on AMG editions or more basic models with the AMG appearance package. It now has a mesh grille made of tiny M-B emblems, high-output LED headlamps with a low profile and a chromed lower lip, and faux exhaust ports that are also chromed. The wheels are painted with stars, and there are wide metal running boards.

When equipped, the interior is just as upmarket, featuring wood panelling, a Burmester audio, glossy piano black accents, and well-bolstered, athletic seats both up front and in back. Around 40 miles of pure electric driving are possible with the 450e’s multimodal hybrid powertrain, and the battery can occasionally be automatically replenished while stopping. You can also select a sport setting or go full gas to conserve electricity. The paddles may shift through the gears or do extremely powerful regenerative braking in hybrid mode.

The off-road capability of Mercedes’ increasingly upscale GLEs is still something the company takes great pride in, and the newest systems offer a cool display with a digitised see-through hood video image for planning trail moves, as well as access to the vehicle’s built-in trail speed control settings and information on wheel articulation, tyre temperature, and grade.

Meanwhile, the higher GLE 580 may be equipped with the “Off-Road Engineering” package, which enhances the regular air suspension with skid plate and more than an inch of additional height, if you want to outperform the Tacoma even further. It’s 3.7 seconds to 60 mph type of insane, complete on my tester with the optional ceramic brakes up front to really restrict the craziness, as well as massively offset 21-inch open-spoke wheels and tyres (315 width in the back). Higher output Cadillac Escalade Vs will be utterly destroyed by the 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8 and its 627 pound-feet of torque.

In an even more advanced cockpit, which features double-wide instrument and navigation screens literally teeming with user-selectable combinations of throttle, shifting, ride, and other time-space-warp control, you can also experience total information overload.
