Mercedes-Benz AMG C-class Coupes Will Be Replaced

With the 2024 CLE-class replacing the Mercedes-Benz AMG C-class coupes and E-class coupes, two recently discontinued models, Mercedes-Benz is reducing the selection of coupes available. The CLE debuts with a sophisticated, sleek exterior, two electrified powertrains, and a tech-focused interior that draws inspiration from the C-class and E-class sedans. Early in 2024, the CLE goes on sale in the US; a cabriolet version follows later.

Modern C- and E-class automobile stylistic cues are combined. While the full-width taillight (really two lights connected by a dark red trim piece) repeats the appearance of the E-class, the sleek LED headlamps and trapezoidal grille mirror the C-class. As is customary for Mercedes, the bodywork has sculpted bumpers and smooth, flowing surfaces broken up by sharp lines on the side. Numerous miniature Mercedes-Benz three-pointed stars are used in the grille design.

The CLE is somewhat longer than the previous E-class coupe and reaches 6.5 inches farther than the Mercedes-Benz AMG C-class coupe cars, measuring 191 inches bumper to bumper. With the CLE’s 112.8-inch wheelbase being within an inch of both of its forebears, the length increase is nearly entirely in the overhangs. Three golf bags may fit in the trunk, according to Mercedes, and the inside has more room than the previous C-class coupe.

The M254 engine, a 2.0-liter inline-four turbocharged engine that produces 255 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque, is the same engine that powers the base CLE300 and is also used in the C300 and E350 sedans. The M256 engine from the E450 car, a 3.0-liter inline-six turbocharged engine producing 375 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of torque, is added to the CLE450. Both powertrains have an integrated starter-generator that uses a 48-volt electrical system to generate power, with the electric motor producing an additional 23 horsepower and 148 pound-feet of torque. To lessen turbo lag and improve the start/stop system, this extra power is supplied in at lower rpm.

In all designs, the electric motor, power electronics, and gearbox cooler are housed in the nine-speed automatic gearbox, which also serves to reduce weight and space requirements. The CLE450 comes standard with a firmer sport-tuned suspension, which is also available on the AMG package for the CLE300. The front and rear suspensions are multilink in design.

The 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster, the 11.9-inch central touchscreen that is slightly slanted towards the driver, and the circular air vents all have the same appearance as those in the current C-class. A third screen for the front passenger is an option on the E-class, but it is skipped in the CLE. Leather covers the flat-bottomed steering wheel, and the front seats, which were made expressly for the CLE, have four-way lumbar support and are heated as standard. Optional features include seven-zone massages and seat ventilation. A standard 17-speaker Burmester surround-sound system with Dolby Atmos is also included in the CLE, enabling “individual instruments or voices to be placed around the listening area” with compatible Apple Music songs.
