Important Dos And Don’ts When Preparing For A Photoshoot

High-quality professional headshots or business portraits are key when marketing yourself as a professional. Whatever your industry or field is, these kinds of photos are useful tools to build and showcase your brand and get you noticed by employers, hiring managers, clients, and customers.

When getting your professional headshots or business portraits taken, there are certain things that you should do and avoid getting the results that you want. Below are examples of important dos and don’ts to keep in mind before you head to your on-location photoshoot session to get your headshots taken:

DO choose your outfit in advance.

Do not wait until the last minute to decide on what clothes to wear for your on-location photoshoot. Days or even weeks before the appointment date, you should start going through your closet or shopping for an appropriate outfit for your on-location portraits or headshots so that you can ensure it is a perfect fit and makes you look the way that you want people to see you.

DO practice your hair and makeup.

Whether you are doing your own hair and makeup or going to a salon to get fixed, you should have a practice run or trial before the day of your shoot. That way, you can see what the final product looks like, and make the necessary changes and adjustments if there is something that you do not like.

DO get enough sleep and rest before the scheduled day.

The night before getting your on-location portraits, make sure that you sleep and rest well. Eat healthily, drink lots of water, wash your face, and apply skincare products so that you will look good and fresh in your photos.

Don’t try a new hairstyle so close to the photoshoot day.

If you have plans to dye, perm, or cut your hair, you might want to wait until after the photo shoot to do it. The reason for this is that you do not know how the new hairstyle will suit you. With your current hairstyle, you already have an idea of what you will look like, how to style it to look your best, and so on. There will be no surprises that may negatively impact the end product.

Don’t be late.

Wake up early and head to the photoshoot location with enough time to get settled. Make sure to set an alarm the night before so that you do not end up rushing and making everyone wait for you. Remember to also get your stuff ready, such as ironing your clothes and putting your photoshoot props in your bag, before going to bed so that you do not spend the morning trying to get everything done.

Don’t be nervous.

Many people are not comfortable in front of the camera. If you are one of them, you should practice your poses in front of the mirror or your family or friends to determine how to smile, where to place your hands, and how to sit or stand properly before the big day. This way, you can lessen your nervousness and appear more relaxed during the actual photoshoot session. Remember to take a deep breath and relax.
