If you are preparing to sell your home, you’ll have to pack up all of your legal and financial documents and make copies of them to give to the buyer when you close on the sale. Instead of making copies, consider having them professionally cast into Lucite. Here’s how to make legal and financial lucite castings documents yourself without any special equipment, so you can take them with you wherever you go.
- What You’ll Need
- Silicone putty (or other)
- Mold release
- Newspaper, aluminum foil, wax paper or other materials for making a mold Thin sheets of wood for making a mold box
- Knife or scraper for cutting silicone putty into thin sheets
- Scissors or other tool for cutting the silicone putty or new material into thin strips
The Casting Process
To make a Lucite casting, you will need: an original document with black ink, a flat surface, silicone rubber molding material (such as Smooth-On brand RTV Silicone Rubber), plastic sheeting, an oven or heat gun. First, lay down the plastic sheeting on your work surface. Next, place the original document face down on top of the plastic sheeting and carefully pour the silicone rubber over it. Wait for at least 45 minutes before removing it from the work surface. You should now have a complete copy of your legal or financial document in Lucite!
Curing the Casting
-Lucite casting is an ancient process where a document is literally written on a piece of clear, transparent plastic. You’ll need: A blank sheet of Lucite, an artist’s brush, India ink (or similar black pigment), water, paper towels or cotton balls.
-Apply the black pigment with the artist’s brush onto one side of the Lucite. The thickness should be thin enough so that you can see through it.
-Dip your fingers in water and use them to moisten the other side of the Lucite until it has a thin film over it. Then lay down your document on top so that you can read what is written from both sides.
The Finished Product
Lucite castings are a great way to preserve your legal documents. They can be used for any type of document: wills, contracts, leases, etc. When you are done with the lucite badge embedments process, you will have a hard copy and digital copy of your document.
The first step is making sure that you have all the documents that need to be copied in front of you. If they aren’t organized yet, now would be a good time to do so before the next steps. If your paper documents are already in order, the next step is scanning them into digital format on a high resolution scanner.
