Part time bartender George McKerrow Jr. opened the first Longhorn Steakhouse Hours Restaurant & Saloon in Atlanta in August 1981. This was the flagship location for the company. Before it turn into a restaurant, the building use as an X-rated video store and bookstore.

During the three days of the storm, the steaks and the real friendliness of the staff surprised and delighted customers, earning them their loyalty. By the spring of that year, word-of-mouth had spread about Longhorn Steakhouse.

McKerrow opened the restaurant because he loves grilling and wants to serve the best steak. Longhorn Steakhouse says that some of the cuts available today are Ribeyes, T-bones, the restaurant’s famous porterhouse steak, a slowroasted prime rib, and Flo’s Filet. After Longhorn Steakhouse did well, McKerrow opened Capital Grille in New York City to add to his chain of steakhouses. He and Ted Turner started Ted’s Montana Grill as a business together in 2002. He is now the president and CEO of the company.
In order to become a Grill Master at Longhorn Steakhouse, employees must go through a tough training programme.
At each Longhorn Steakhouse, there are two or three employees who have gone through the training and passed the test to be called “Grill Masters.” After these grill chefs have prove that they can handle any beef order, the best ones will be invite to compete in a “Steak Master” competition for the whole company.

Longhorn Steakhouse made a call-in helpline for Fourth of July grill masters in 2013 to answer all of their burning questions about how to cook dinner over open flames. This is done to make their lives easier.
The promotion name “Grill Us Hotline,” and it placed 25 Grill Masters on call all night throughout the holiday weekend to assist anyone in need.
Since then, the hotline has been kept up and is now open on Memorial Day weekend as well.
